Well, good news is that our washing machine is hooked up and all the kinks are finally worked out by a plumber.
Bad news: we can't hook up our dryer. The electrician told us that the wiring is so old in this apt that it would cost over 1000 NIS to hook everything up.
Oh, well.
For now, the clothes line is working out pretty well...if you don't mind crackling towels. Our dryer now works pretty well as a microwave stand for now.
It takes about a day for a load to dry, so we've been doing a load every night and hanging them out all the next day. There is a huge wind that blows right through our apt from about 4pm to 8pm every day, so for now, not having a dryer seems doable short-term. What I'm concerned about is the damp, cold winter coming up. We might end up having to rent or buy a dryer second-hand.
I was comparing notes on the hang-dry situation with a friend who was here for Shabbat (Chanina R., for the Baltimorians)- also just made aliyah. She recently got a dryer (lucky girl :) but had been hanging her clothes as well until then. We feel like such Yidishe mama's, leaning out the window with the clothes pins in our teeth.
For me, though, it actually is something I enjoy doing, in weird way. (Don't tell Rich...I enjoy HIM doing it a lot more!) Maybe it's the gorgeous mountain view from the clothes line (see pic) or maybe it's just the feeling of somehow connecting to the The Land.
Don't ask me to explain that.
It just feels natural. You know- for now. Until our dryer is functional.
Hey- I deserve a break after hours of hanging up itty bitty baby socks, and tiny elmo underpants, one-by-one.

I just went up to get our laundry out of the dryer and our dryer is broken so we're in the same boat. Let us know if you see any good deals on dryers.
It's also environmentally virtuous! And clothes hung to dry outside smell better, too.
You get used to the crunchy towels...
And you get used to drying laundry in the living room in the winter. :) We only got our dryer after our 3rd kid. And BTW you are welcome to use ours if you're stuck. :)

I've learned a few tricks being dryerless in our apt in RBS. (when I'm there)...use fabric softener in your wash liberally or get someone to bring you from US (Target sells it here in Baltimore) the "wrinkle releaser" that downy makes that you spray on clothes after they are dry...spray it on towels when you hang them outside and they are less crunchier then!!
